Job Duties

Directs all medical, nursing, environmental health, administrative, and other public health services in a health district. Oversees all district-related public health epidemiologic activities including reportable disease surveillance, prevention, outbreak investigation and control, and data analyses and reporting. Utilizes an interdisciplinary staff with efforts directed toward community assessment and health education, program design, program evaluation, resource allocation, quality of patient care, environmental protection, and inter-agency organization of health-related activities. The nonphysician health director shall rely upon a licensed physician on staff, if applicable, or shall enter into a consulting agreement (MOU/MOA) with a licensed physician for the purpose of executing prescribing duties, consulting on clinical matters, and carrying out all other State Health Commissioner delegated statutory authority requiring a physician in accordance with the Code of Virginia.

Pay ranges are as follows:

Non-physician- $170,000-$198,000
Physician- $170,00- $220,000

The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision and life insurance,

Minimum Qualifications
---At least one of the following: Master's (MPH, MBA, MHA, MPA, MSN, Pharm
D) or Doctoral degree in the area of public health and has at least three years
of professional experience in a full-time position in either a public health
agency or public health-related position; or MD or DO Board Certified in preventive medicine or a primary care or other
appropriate specialty (with Valid Virginia Medical License); or equivalent education, training and
experience as deemed qualified by the Commissioner of Health
---Moderate (3+ years) professional experience in either a public health agency
or a public health-related activity
---Extensive experience in organizational or community leadership
---Demonstrated ability to lead high level teams and manage change in the
workplace
---Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
---Proven leadership, including working in an interdisciplinary environment
---Experience managing in a team-based model
---Knowledge of a wide range of local public health programs
---Ability to work with local with elected officials, senior local government
officials, and community stakeholders; ability to develop partnerships
---Experience with budget development, execution of financial management,
and managing grants
---Knowledge and application of HR policies, including compliance
---Experience implementing internal controls
---Ability to resolve confidential and sensitive issues, maintain confidentiality,
and maintain balanced professional relationships
---Ability to provide communications and media relations

Additional Considerations
---Extensive experience in leading or directing a public health
organization
---Comprehensive experience and demonstrated skill in administering a broad
array of public health programs
---Considerable experience working with local, state, or federal government
officials
