Responsibilities:Respiratory therapists specialize in treating
acute and chronic respiratory conditions, including asthma, cardiac
arrest, drowning, blockages, anaphylaxis reactions, emphysema, lung
infections and cancers. Under the guidance of a physician, they
work in all units within a hospital, including the ICU, Pediatric
ICU, Neonatal ICU, ER, sleep and pulmonary labs, or in nursing
homes and home health settings. They conduct many diagnostic and
analytic procedures such as evaluating lung capacity, performing
chest physiotherapy, monitoring cardiopulmonary systems, checking
patients' tissue specimens, and conducting pulmonary function
tests. A primary and vital task of respiratory therapists is the
management of ventilators and artificial breathing devices for
those who have breathing problems.
